The Zayed National Museum has been named one of TIME’s World’s Greatest Places 2026, a prestigious annual list that features 100 remarkable destinations from around the world.
This recognition places the museum among the most inspiring cultural sites globally. It is also one of only two destinations selected from the Middle East and one of three from the MENA region in this year’s list, chosen by TIME’s international network of contributors.
Located in the Saadiyat Cultural District in Abu Dhabi, the museum officially opened on 3 December 2025. The district is known for hosting some of the world’s leading cultural institutions.
The museum showcases over 300,000 years of human history in the region. It also pays tribute to Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, highlighting his life, vision, and lasting legacy.
Visitors can explore six permanent galleries, an outdoor gallery, and a temporary exhibition space. The museum’s collection includes rare and valuable artefacts such as the Abu Dhabi Pearl, one of the oldest natural pearls in the world, and the Blue Qur’an, considered one of the finest works in Islamic art.
A major highlight is the full-scale reconstruction of an ancient Magan Boat. This project was developed through a research partnership with Zayed University and New York University Abu Dhabi.
The museum’s design, created by renowned architect Norman Foster of Foster + Partners, is inspired by the wings of a falcon in flight. This design reflects Emirati heritage and the values of Sheikh Zayed.
TIME’s World’s Greatest Places list is published every year, recognising destinations that offer unique and meaningful experiences for travellers and culture lovers.
