Asia Rugby has officially approved the opening of its new operations office in Dubai, while continuing to keep its legal headquarters in Hong Kong. The decision was confirmed during a virtual meeting of the Asia Rugby Council, led by President Qais Al Dhalai.
The move follows an agreement signed with the UAE Government in mid-2022. During the meeting, 27 out of 28 member unions voted in favor of setting up the Dubai office, showing strong support across the region.
The new office aims to improve Asia Rugby’s operational and financial efficiency. It will also help strengthen communication and coordination with national rugby unions across Asia.
Qais Al Dhalai thanked the UAE Government for its support, along with Sheikh Mansoor bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, President of the UAE Olympic Committee, for hosting the office at its headquarters. He also appreciated the Ministry of Sport and Minister Dr. Ahmad Belhoul Al Falasi for their cooperation.
Al Dhalai described the decision as a historic step for rugby in Asia. He said it reflects the trust and commitment of member unions to grow the sport and improve its structure.
He added that the UAE was chosen due to its strong reputation in hosting major international sporting events and its advanced administrative environment, which supports global sports organizations.
This move is expected to support the next phase of rugby’s growth across Asia.
