The UAE marked World Tsunami Awareness Day, underscoring the importance of public readiness against one of nature’s most destructive forces. This year’s theme, “Be Tsunami Ready – Invest in Tsunami Preparedness,” highlighted the critical need for early warning systems and coordinated community action.
Tsunamis, capable of causing widespread devastation, loss of life, and long-term social and environmental impacts, remain a global threat, particularly to coastal regions. The United Nations observes this day to remind communities about the significance of awareness, preparation, and swift response.
The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) actively participated in the observance, promoting initiatives aimed at reducing risks and improving resilience. Efforts include enhancing the Tsunami Early Warning System for North-West Indian Ocean countries, organizing regional workshops to streamline evacuation procedures, and using media effectively to disseminate alerts.
The NCM also conducts national awareness programs, training sessions, and participates in large-scale tsunami simulations like IOWave25. These exercises test community readiness, strengthen evacuation planning, and foster a culture of prevention.
Through these initiatives, the UAE continues to demonstrate a proactive approach in protecting its residents, reinforcing the importance of preparedness, and contributing to regional and international collaboration on disaster risk management.
