Devastating Winter Storm Hits Gaza Tent Camps Amid Ceasefire

A severe winter storm has drastically impacted Gaza's vulnerable tent camps, flooding shelters, destroying food supplies, and forcing countless displaced families to confront the cold, potential disease, and overwhelming despair.

In areas like Khan Younis and along the coast, relentless rain poured into makeshift tents, transforming dirt paths into rivers. Families awoke to find mattresses floating, clothing entirely soaked, and children trembling in the frigid air. The overflow of open sewage and debris further exacerbated risky living conditions.

“We were submerged inside the tent,” recounted Um Salman Abu Qenas, a mother seeking refuge in Khan Younis. “Everything has been ruined, and we had no means to sleep.”

According to aid workers, the storm has exposed the shortcomings of the ceasefire in providing real relief. Even though fighting has halted, the supply of winter essentials and shelter materials remains woefully inadequate for Gaza's largely displaced populace.

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency warned that the cramped, cold, and unhygienic conditions significantly increase the risk of illness, particularly for vulnerable groups like children, the elderly, and the sick. With restricted medical resources and inadequate shelter, even bad weather has become a life-threatening ordeal.

In Muwasi, Sabreen Qudeeh described the distress of waking up to rain dripping from their tent roof and floodwater seeping inside. “My daughters were crying through the night,” she noted, highlighting their soaked blankets and ruined bedding.

Emergency services have reported thousands of distress calls due to collapsed or submerged tents. In Gaza City, several bomb-damaged structures also succumbed to the weight of the rain, urging residents to steer clear of dangerous buildings.

Within the camps, families frantically attempted to bail out excess water using buckets and plastic containers. Aliaa Bahtiti shared her worries about her young son who spent the night in water. “He was cold by morning,” she said. “We cannot afford food, blankets, or dry clothes.”

Humanitarian organizations estimate that only a small number of the necessary winterized tents and shelters have reached Gaza following the ceasefire. Many dispatched tents offer inadequate insulation and minimal protection against cold and rainfall. Local agencies are also facing shortages of water pumps and machinery needed to manage flooded areas and debris.

As the homes in Gaza remain mostly destroyed and infrastructure in ruins from months of conflict, winter storms are intensifying the humanitarian crisis. Aid agencies stress that without a significant increase in unhindered humanitarian access, more families are at risk of preventable illnesses, displacement, and hardship as severe weather prevails.
