Disease X is a theoretical pathogen, not an immediate threat but potentially causing a major future pandemic. Coined by scientists and the World Health Organization, it may belong to any of the 25 virus families capable of causing illness. In 2018, it was added to the WHO's Blueprint list of diseases. Scientists speculate that Disease X could be 20 times deadlier than the recent SARS-Covid virus, urging research and development to prevent widespread deaths.

While Disease X is not an imminent threat, preparations are crucial for minimizing potential deaths and devastation. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus advises nations to stay prepared for the possible emergence of this threat. The unknown factors surrounding emerging diseases make it a matter of when, not if, according to Ghebreyesus.

Disease X is not a specific disease but a term given to a potential novel infectious agent. It represents an unknown illness that could pose a severe microbial threat to humans in the future. Labeling it as Disease X aims to prioritize preparations for dealing with a disease lacking vaccines or drug treatments that could give rise to a severe epidemic.

The concept of Disease X explores the mysterious and unpredictable realm of infectious diseases. Unlike lifestyle or genetic diseases affecting specific individuals or groups, infectious diseases, represented by Disease X, have the potential to impact global populations. It serves as a hypothetical scenario, envisioning a future infectious disease that could affect the entire world, with a focus on its potential lethality compared to known infections.

Potential triggers for new pandemics include influenza, Ebola, Zika, and coronaviruses, such as SARS and MERS. However, SARS and MERS may face challenges in triggering a fresh pandemic due to widespread immunity from the virus causing Covid-19.

Drawing lessons from the Covid-19 pandemic, such as rapid vaccine development and healthcare capacity expansion, can help in dealing with future pandemics by Disease X if nations stay alert and prepared. The concept of Disease X being 20 times more lethal emphasizes the potential magnitude of impact, considering factors like the rate of spread and the number of infections. Accurate predictive models enable better tracking, tracing, and response strategies, contributing to a more informed and vigilant global response to emerging diseases.
