Washington: Kamala Harris will be confirmed as the Democratic US presidential nominee through an electronic vote beginning Thursday, a significant shift from the traditional in-person balloting that typically marks the start of the party's national convention.
With President Joe Biden having ended his re-election bid less than two weeks ago, Harris, the 52-year-old vice president, is poised to lead the Democratic ticket. She is the sole Democratic contender for the presidency, setting the stage for a November matchup against Republican Donald Trump.
Almost 4,000 delegates, representing grassroots activists and politicians allocated during the primaries, have already expressed their support for Harris by signing petitions. The electronic vote, replacing the usual convention spectacle, will officially confirm her nomination.
No other Democrats have emerged to challenge Harris, making her confirmation as the first Black and South Asian woman to head a major party’s ticket a formality. According to the Democratic National Committee (DNC), Harris received the backing of 99 percent of the delegates who signed the petitions. No other candidate met the required threshold of 300 signatures.

DNC Chair Jaime Harrison emphasized the significance of the upcoming vote, stating, "Our delegates have an important responsibility -- and opportunity -- in the days ahead to cast their history-making ballots for Vice President Harris, ensuring that she will be on the ballot in every state this November."
In addition to the pledged delegates, approximately 700 “superdelegates,” including state governors, members of Congress, and party officials, will also participate in the vote. The roll call is set to begin at 9:00 am (1300 GMT) on Thursday, with delegates having until 6:00 pm (2000 GMT) on Monday to submit their votes via the DNC’s online platform.
The results may be announced late Monday. Following her confirmation, Harris is expected to embark on a campaign tour across seven key battleground states with her yet-to-be-announced running mate. Initial reports suggest that the tour will commence in Pennsylvania on Tuesday, though the DNC has not yet confirmed this.
The 2024 nominating process, while largely similar to the 2020 virtual format due to the COVID-19 pandemic, reflects a departure from past conventions. The shift to a virtual format is influenced by Ohio’s deadline next week for parties to submit their certified candidates for the November election.
Details about the announcement of the results remain unclear. The DNC has not disclosed whether the vote will be livestreamed or if a rolling tally will be made available to the public. It is also uncertain whether preliminary results will be released before the conclusion of the voting period.
The virtual roll call marks the formal start of the 2024 convention, though the celebration is expected to begin in earnest when thousands of party activists gather in Chicago on August 19. The convention will feature ceremonial votes for Harris and her running mate, celebrating her ascent from state politics to the top of the Democratic ticket.
Georgia Senator Raphael Warnock highlighted Harris’s diverse background during a recent rally in Atlanta, saying, “Think about this: her dad is of Jamaican descent, her mother’s of South Asian descent, and then she went to the great Howard University, worked in California, worked in the United States Senate. That is the American story. She brings all of those strands together. She sees us because in a real sense she is all of us.”
