India and China have successfully completed the disengagement process in the Depsang and Demchok regions of Eastern Ladakh, adhering to the announced timeline. According to Army sources, patrolling in these areas is expected to begin soon, coinciding with a sweet exchange between troops on both sides in celebration of Diwali on Thursday.
Indian Army officials confirmed on Wednesday that the verification of the disengagement is currently underway. Ground commanders will determine the specifics of the patrolling modalities. Chinese Ambassador to India, Xu Feihong, remarked in Kolkata that both nations have reached "important understandings," highlighting a significant meeting between President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the recent BRICS summit in Russia.

Ambassador Xu noted that the leaders' discussions have established guiding principles for the future development of bilateral relations. He expressed hope that the consensus achieved will facilitate smoother interactions and minimize disruptions due to specific disagreements.
The recent disengagement agreement, announced by India on October 21, marks a critical step in returning to the pre-2020 status in the contentious areas. The process included dismantling structures and restoring the land to its original condition. Following the announcement, satellite images revealed that the Chinese side had begun removing structures, confirming the progress of the disengagement.
Images taken from the Depsang plains showed the removal of vehicles and tents previously present in the area, which had restricted Indian patrols. Additionally, another set of images indicated the dismantling of semi-permanent Chinese structures in Demchok.
The stand-off between India and China began in May 2020, culminating in a violent clash in Galwan that resulted in the deaths of 20 Indian soldiers, with the Chinese side also sustaining undisclosed losses. Since then, both nations have engaged in military-level discussions to resolve the ongoing tensions. Previous disengagements in September 2022 involved the withdrawal of troops from the Gogra-Hot Springs area, allowing both sides to return to positions held before April 2020.
After the latest patrolling agreement was confirmed by Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri on October 21, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar reiterated the significance of the understanding during a recent summit. He emphasized that the agreement restores the status quo of 2020 and facilitates patrolling as previously conducted.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping's meeting at the BRICS summit on October 23 further underscored the importance of maintaining peace and stability along the border, marking their first bilateral discussion since 2019.
