Vietnam’s key political figure, To Lam, has pledged decisive action against corruption and aims for accelerated economic growth during his address to senior members of the Communist Party at a significant congress in Hanoi.
In his remarks on Tuesday, Lam emphasized the need for resolute measures against misconduct within the government. He cautioned that corruption, excessive expenditures, and sluggish decision-making are undermining public confidence and hindering national advancement.
“All inappropriate actions must be taken seriously,” Lam stated in front of nearly 1,600 party representatives. He urged the elimination of bureaucratic obstacles, enhancement of discipline, and rigorous enforcement of laws.
Significant Party Congress
This weeklong congress, held once every five years, is pivotal for Vietnam's political landscape. It will determine the country's leadership and outline economic and policy objectives leading into 2030.
Currently, Lam is the General Secretary of the Communist Party, Vietnam’s top position. Some reports indicate he might also pursue the presidency, granting him control over both party and state affairs. Analysts argue this would empower him to drive forward essential reforms.
Ambitious Economic Aspirations
A principal ambition discussed during the congress is to elevate Vietnam’s economy by a minimum of 10 percent annually through 2030. Party officials assert that such vigorous growth is crucial for enhancing living standards, safeguarding national interests, and fortifying Vietnam’s role in international trade.
Lam indicated the need to trim unnecessary regulations and boost international trade to facilitate economic expansion. He also reaffirmed the significance of a thriving private sector, advocating for a fair and transparent business environment.
Ongoing Major Reforms
Since taking office approximately 17 months ago, Lam has enacted swift changes in governance. He has streamlined administration, disbanded numerous ministries or agencies, and eliminated close to 150,000 positions from government employment.
Additionally, he has pursued substantial infrastructure initiatives, including rail and energy projects, to bolster long-term growth.
Confronting Multiple Challenges
Lam acknowledged that the congress is unfolding during challenging times. Vietnam faces natural calamities like floods and storms, global security threats, and disruptions in energy and food supplies.
To adequately respond, he argued that investments in infrastructure must consider climate adaptability and enhance connections within regional and global markets.
Documents presented during the meeting recognized that weak law enforcement and delayed actions have plagued the nation historically. Leaders have advocated for stricter adherence to restore public faith.
With bold commitments and ambitious targets, To Lam is signaling a transformative era for Vietnam, focusing on transparent governance, robust growth, and lasting stability.
