ICC Suspends USA Cricket Over Governance Breaches

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has suspended USA Cricket’s membership with immediate effect, citing “repeated and continued breaches” of its obligations under the ICC constitution.

Despite the suspension, the United States national team will still participate in upcoming events, including the Men's T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka in February 2026, and will continue preparations for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

During the suspension, the ICC will temporarily oversee the management and administration of the US national teams.

The ICC highlighted several constitutional breaches by USA Cricket, including the failure to implement a functional governance structure and insufficient progress towards achieving national governing body (NGB) status with the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee. The ICC also cited unspecified “significant actions that caused reputational damage to cricket in the United States and around the world.”

USA Cricket was previously placed “on notice” at the 2024 ICC annual general meeting (AGM) for non-compliance with membership criteria. The body was given 12 months to address the issues, and while five of the eight concerns relating to governance, finance, and administration were reportedly addressed, the ICC confirmed in July 2025 that the organization remained on notice.

The United States has been an associate member of the ICC since 1965 and competed in the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup, reaching the Super 8 stage and earning automatic qualification for the 2026 tournament.

USA Cricket CEO Johnathan Atkeison issued a statement saying, “We were informed by the ICC of the decision to suspend USA Cricket. Obviously, we are disappointed, but we are awaiting further information from them regarding the conditions for reinstatement so that we can evaluate the path forward.”

The ICC’s decision underscores ongoing governance challenges in USA Cricket, but the national team will continue competing internationally under ICC oversight.
