US Government Cancels TSA Officers' Union Contract, AFGE to Sue

The U.S. government has officially annulled the union contract that affected approximately 47,000 Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers, as stated by the Department of Homeland Security on Friday.

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has dissolved the collective bargaining agreement that enabled TSA officers to negotiate their work conditions via their union. The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), representing the officers, plans to pursue legal action to contest this ruling.

A new labor framework is scheduled to start on January 11. As per this new system, union dues will no longer be automatically deducted from TSA officers' salaries. The Department claims this change aims to enhance the agency's focus on security operations, workforce efficiency, and the optimal utilization of taxpayer money.

This decision follows a federal court's temporary injunction in June against Noem’s prior effort to annul the contract in March, which had been halted by a court ruling.

Recently, the U.S. House of Representatives voted to re-establish collective bargaining rights for approximately one million federal employees, including TSA officers, aiming to overturn an executive order from President Trump that restricted these rights.

Federal employees face stringent labor rights restrictions, including a prohibition on striking and limitations on negotiating wages, benefits, or job classifications.

AFGE President Everett Kelley condemned the government's action, labeling it illegal and suggesting that the termination could undermine airport security and negatively impact TSA officers nationwide.

TSA representatives claimed that the new labor system would redirect the agency back toward security priorities and improve operational efficiency.

The previously established contract, which was annulled, was signed in May 2024 after extensive negotiations and included enhanced shift trade options, increased uniform allowances, and new leave types like parental bereavement leave and safety leave due to weather concerns.

This year, President Trump removed TSA Administrator David Pekoske, who was initially appointed during Trump's first term and later reappointed by President Biden. A replacement has yet to be identified.
