The President of the United States has delivered a pointed message to Iran, indicating that "time is running out" to finalize a nuclear deal as American military forces assemble notably in the Gulf.
Donald Trump referred to a "massive armada" progressing toward Iran, highlighting a prominent naval fleet led by the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier, ready to act decisively if required.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi responded by emphasizing that the Iranian military stands prepared with “fingers on the trigger” to respond immediately to any acts of aggression, whatever the form. Iran has repeatedly asserted that its nuclear ambitions are peaceful, countering US claims of its pursuit of nuclear weapons.
The timing of Trump’s warning coincides with severe crackdowns on protests in Iran that erupted over the plummeting Iranian currency and escalated into wider discontent towards the government. Trump pledged support for those affected, stating “Help is on the way,” even though he later reported that executions of protestors appeared to have ceased.
Human rights organizations estimate thousands have died since the protests began, with some estimates suggesting fatalities could exceed 25,000.
In focusing on Iran’s nuclear ambitions, Trump urged Tehran to "Come to the Table" for an equitable agreement advocating for "NO NUCLEAR WEAPONS." He cautioned that any future strikes against Iran’s nuclear facilities would be "far worse" than previous assaults.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio informed the Senate that the Iranian regime is experiencing unprecedented weakness, battling economic turmoil, and is unable to address protestor demands effectively. He confirmed that US forces are strategically positioned to counter any Iranian threats in the area.
Iran’s officials reiterated their openness to negotiate a fair nuclear deal devoid of external pressure while asserting their right to peaceful nuclear technology. They denied any intent to acquire nuclear weapons.
In parallel, satellite imagery and open-source data indicate a noticeable increase in US military activity in the Middle East. Fighter jets have been stationed in Jordan, new air defense systems have been installed in Qatar, and various naval vessels remain docked in Bahrain. US drones and reconnaissance planes are actively operating near Iranian airspace.
Iran has also deployed its drone carrier vessel, the IRIS Shahid Bagheri, close to its territorial waters, marking its readiness to respond if necessary.
Following the US's exit from the 2015 nuclear agreement in 2018, Iran has consistently violated uranium enrichment limits, further heightening tensions. The last US military operation targeting Iranian nuclear assets occurred last June, which Washington claims limited Iran’s nuclear weapons capabilities. Iran has contended the attack had minimal effects.
In retaliation, Iran fired missiles at a US base in Qatar, which Trump dismissed as "very weak" and anticipated.
The environment remains fraught as both parties display military readiness and engage diplomatically, with global observers keenly watching to see if Iran opts for renewed discussions or faces intensified pressure.
