The US Embassy in India has issued an urgent alert to international students, underscoring that violating American laws can lead to severe repercussions for those on student visas. The embassy stressed that being in the US on a visa is considered a privilege rather than an inherent right.
According to the advisory, students who breach the law might experience immediate repercussions, including the cancellation of their visa. Legal infractions could also result in deportation and long-term bans from obtaining future US visas. Authorities are advising students to adhere strictly to all regulations to protect their educational and travel prospects.
The embassy reemphasized that monitoring visa holders is an ongoing process that continues even after a visa is issued. US authorities regularly evaluate the conduct of those holding visas throughout their stay. Any student arrested or engaged in illegal activities may face swift action under immigration laws.
In a recent advisory, the embassy also reminded applicants for specific non-immigrant visa categories, including those for student and exchange programs, that background checks are a crucial part of the application process. Applicants may need to maintain parts of their online profiles accessible for officials to verify their identity and eligibility.
These repeated advisories highlight the US government's increased scrutiny toward visa holders and applicants. Students intending to study in the US are urged to remain vigilant, comply with local laws, and recognize that misconduct can have lasting implications on their academic and career trajectories.
The embassy concluded its warning by encouraging students to act with responsibility and protect their study opportunities in the United States by diligently adhering to all legal and immigration protocols.
