US Designates 8 Drug Cartels, Criminal Gangs as 'Global Terrorists'

Washington, United States:The United States has formally designated Venezuela's Tren de Aragua, Mexico's Sinaloa Cartel, and six other drug-trafficking organizations as "global terrorist" entities. The notice was issued in a federal notice on Wednesday as part of the US government's continued campaign to combat organized crime.

The action is one of the steps by former US President Donald Trump to take an aggressive approach towards gang activities in the US. Trump has adopted a hard-line policy since coming back to the White House in addressing criminal organizations and illegal migrants. His administration views these cartels as an important threat to national security beyond common organized crime.

On January 20, his first day back in the office, Trump signed an executive order that established a new procedure for designating such groups as terrorist organizations. He said that these cartels are the cause of serious threats to the security and welfare of US citizens. By labeling them as terrorist groups, the US government now has greater authority to combat them.

But Mexico has been concerned that the designation could be used as an excuse by the US to intervene within its own borders against such cartels. Republican politicians have even gone so far as to call for US intervention in Mexico itself to deal with drug-related violence.

The organizations targeted by this new step are MS-13, an El Salvadorian-based criminal gang, and the following Mexican drug cartels: the Gulf Cartel, the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, the Northeast Cartel, the New Michoacan Family, and the United Cartel.

A statement by Secretary of State Marco Rubio justified the rationale behind this move. The notice stated that these groups have either attempted or actually committed acts of terrorism that pose a threat to US citizens, national security, foreign policy, or the country's economy.

Since reopening for work last month, Trump has also made a national emergency along the US-Mexico border. Trump has vowed to deport "millions and millions" of immigrants, claiming many of them have connections with such criminal groups. Trump has stated that these organizations smuggle quantities of illicit drugs into the country and engage in violent activities such as extortion and human trafficking.

Trump made border security an issue during his 2024 presidential campaign. Trump kept referring to releasing criminals from prisons in certain Latin American nations and letting them come into the US illegally. Trump also made some controversial comments calling Venezuelan migrants perilous criminals.

With this latest move, the US government is being tougher on global crime syndicates, and it hopes to curtail their power and put an end to the influx of drugs and violence into the country. The move, however, could also exacerbate tensions with nations such as Mexico, which is against foreign interference in its war against the drug cartels.
