Indian man calls Mumbai ‘chaotic’ after Dubai trip, sparks viral debate

An Indian man recently shared his thoughts after a trip to Dubai, comparing the city’s lifestyle, infrastructure, and civic sense to his hometown, Mumbai.

In a now-viral Reddit post, a user named Yash pointed out the huge difference between Dubai and Mumbai, expressing his disappointment with the conditions in India’s financial capital. After spending over 40 years in Mumbai, he admitted that returning from Dubai made him realize how much the city is struggling.

Civic Behavior: A Clear Difference

Yash highlighted the differences in how people behave in public spaces. He said that in Dubai, people take care of their surroundings by keeping things clean and using dustbins properly. He noticed that many people there carry used wrappers or tissues in their pockets until they find a bin.

In contrast, he criticized how people in Mumbai throw garbage on the streets without hesitation. He shared an example of how drivers in Mumbai casually throw bottles out of moving cars, making the city dirtier. He felt frustrated that many people complained about the mess but didn’t take responsibility for keeping the city clean.

He believes Mumbai needs better civic awareness and education so that people understand the importance of keeping their surroundings tidy.

Traffic and Infrastructure: Two Opposite Worlds

According to Yash, Mumbai’s traffic situation is terrible. The city is always congested, and people rarely follow road rules. Reckless driving, unplanned construction, and poor road conditions make commuting very difficult.

While Dubai also has traffic, he observed that people there follow rules. Drivers stop at signals, stay in their lanes, and drive in an orderly manner. He pointed out that in Mumbai, people often try to cut through traffic and ignore signals, making roads chaotic.

“Mumbai is as chaotic as it gets. I love this city, but it’s becoming unlivable. In Dubai, even with heavy traffic, no one cuts in front of you, vehicles stop at signals, and roads are marked,” he wrote.

Yash praised Dubai for having well-maintained roads, a structured traffic system, and separate lanes for heavy vehicles, which make traveling smoother. He expressed disappointment that Mumbai, despite being such an important city, still struggles with basic urban planning and discipline.

Pollution: A Serious Concern

Yash also spoke about Mumbai’s severe pollution problem. He described the air quality as so bad that it “burns your throat.” Constant construction, poor waste management, and lack of greenery make things worse.

On the other hand, he felt Dubai had a much cleaner environment. He noted that the city has invested heavily in sustainability and pollution control, which benefits both residents and tourists. He believes Mumbai could improve by adopting similar policies and better planning to create a healthier living environment.

Mixed Reactions from the Public

Yash’s post quickly went viral, sparking debates online. Many Reddit users agreed with him, saying they had similar experiences after visiting other developed countries.

One user wrote, “Mumbai isn’t even competing with developed nations anymore. Even smaller countries seem better organized.” Another commented, “After spending two months in Japan, I felt sad returning to India. If I had planned my career differently, I would have moved abroad.”

Some even compared Mumbai to cities in Sri Lanka and Africa, saying those places have better urban planning and civic discipline. Several users admitted that they were seriously thinking about relocating to places like Dubai, Kuala Lumpur, or Bangkok for a better quality of life.

The discussion eventually led to a larger debate about Mumbai’s future. Many people agree that despite being India’s financial capital, the city faces major issues in infrastructure, traffic, and cleanliness. While some defended Mumbai, saying it still has its charm, others felt it was time for serious changes to make the city more livable.
