The United States refrained from commenting on the outcome of India's recently concluded Lok Sabha elections, emphasizing instead the significance of the electoral process itself. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller, speaking at a regular press briefing, highlighted that the US "celebrates the election that happened in India" as it marked the largest exercise of electoral franchise in any country's history.
Miller underscored that electoral matters are the prerogative of the Indian people to decide, affirming that while the US acknowledges and celebrates the scale of India's democratic exercise, specific election outcomes are not subjects for US commentary.

The spokesperson's remarks were prompted by a question from a Pakistani journalist who expressed concerns about Indian Prime Minister Modi's policies potentially affecting religious minorities in India. The journalist alleged that PM Modi's governance aims to transform India into a Hindu state, impacting the security of other religious communities.
During the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the Election Commission of India deployed approximately 1.2 million polling stations across the country to facilitate voting for over 960 million eligible voters across seven phases. This marked a significant increase from the approximately 910 million registered voters in the 2019 elections, reflecting a notable rise in voter participation over the past five years.
Following the elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was sworn in for his third consecutive term on June 9, in a ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan attended by regional leaders and dignitaries from the Indian Ocean neighborhood. The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) secured a majority in the Lok Sabha for the third consecutive time, winning 293 seats. Within the NDA, the BJP alone secured 240 seats out of the 543-member lower house, surpassing the majority mark of 272 seats required.
Prime Minister Modi's re-election places him in the company of Jawaharlal Nehru as only the third Indian leader to serve three consecutive terms as Prime Minister.
