India’s Foreign Secretary, Vikram Misri, visited Bangladesh recently and raised concerns about the safety of minorities in the country. This visit comes during a time of political unrest in Bangladesh, which has caused tensions between the two countries. Misri spoke with the interim government of Bangladesh, led by Yunus, about the situation and India’s concerns.
The problems began in August when former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina stepped down after large protests. The protests were mainly led by student groups who demanded her resignation. After she left office, an interim government was formed, headed by Yunus. Since then, relations between India and Bangladesh have been strained.

During his visit, Misri told the Bangladeshi government that India wanted to have a positive and friendly relationship with Bangladesh. He stressed that India cares about the safety and well-being of minorities in Bangladesh, especially the Hindu community. There have been several reports of violence against Hindus and attacks on Indian properties in Bangladesh, like the destruction of the Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre in Dhaka.
Misri also mentioned that India wants to work together with Bangladesh for mutual benefit and positive ties. He emphasized that India sees its relationship with Bangladesh as one that should help all people, not just governments. Despite these concerns, Misri said that India hoped for a peaceful solution to the issues.
The situation in Bangladesh has affected some parts of India, especially in states like West Bengal and Tripura, which share a border with Bangladesh. In these states, Hindu groups have protested the arrest of a man named Das, who was charged with sedition. The protests became violent when demonstrators stormed the Bangladeshi consulate in Agartala, Tripura, damaging property and burning the Bangladeshi flag.
The United States also commented on the situation, urging both India and Bangladesh to solve their problems peacefully. A spokesperson from the U.S. State Department, Matthew Miller, said, “We want to see all parties resolve their disagreements peacefully.” He stressed the importance of finding peaceful solutions through discussions and cooperation.
Misri’s visit allowed him to talk about the relationship between the two countries and how both sides can work together to solve the problems. He said that India’s goal is to have a relationship with Bangladesh that is peaceful, productive, and good for the people of both countries.
In the end, India continues to hope that Bangladesh will address the issues of violence and minority safety. India wants to maintain good relations with Bangladesh, but the political unrest makes it difficult. The U.S. also hopes that the two countries will resolve their issues peacefully and work together for stability in the region.
