Rescue teams are struggling to locate 32 individuals missing after a catastrophic landslide in West Java, Indonesia, as relentless rain continues to disrupt operations, according to the nation’s disaster management agency. The landslide occurred in Pasir Langu village, Bandung Barat region, early Saturday, triggered by a day of heavy rainfall.
Located about 100 kilometers southeast of Jakarta, Pasir Langu’s mountainous terrain was ravaged by the landslide, which obliterated homes and infrastructure. Efforts to rescue survivors have been ongoing, but rescuers face immense challenges due to both difficult conditions and the weather, which persistently hinders progress.
To date, 34 lives have been lost in this tragedy, with ongoing efforts to locate the 32 missing individuals. Local authorities are closely collaborating with disaster response teams to access remote areas impacted by the landslide, employing specialized tools and trained personnel to assist in the search and recovery operations.
The residents of Pasir Langu and neighboring communities are enduring the severe emotional and physical repercussions of this disaster. Aid initiatives are being activated to deliver essential items such as food, temporary housing, and medical care to those affected. Officials have cautioned that the continuing rainfall could precipitate more landslides, recommending that the population remain alert and adhere to safety protocols.
This landslide highlights the perils associated with heavy downpours in Indonesia’s hilly regions where instability and deforestation exacerbate disaster risks. Authorities urge stronger awareness and advance disaster readiness to mitigate future incidents in these vulnerable areas.
