UNSC takes neutral US stance on Ukraine war

The United Nations Security Council has agreed on a new plan made by the United States on the third year of the war between Russia and Ukraine. This plan does not take any side. It shows that the US is now looking at the war in a different way under President Donald Trump. Before this, the US under Joe Biden was fully supporting Ukraine in the United Nations. But now, Trump’s government is more open to talking with Russia.

Russia’s UN Ambassador, Vassily Nebenzia, said that the US had made some "good changes" in its thinking about the war. He also said this plan was "not perfect" but could be "a first step" toward peace. Since the war started, the Security Council could not take strong action because Russia has the power to stop any decision. But the larger UN General Assembly has voted many times in support of Ukraine, saying that Ukraine has the right to protect itself.

Earlier, the US tried to pass the same plan in the General Assembly, but it was not approved. The final version, which was accepted by the Security Council, expresses sadness for the people who died in the "Russia-Ukraine conflict." It also reminds countries that the UN is there to keep peace in the world and asks for the war to end as soon as possible with a lasting solution. While Security Council plans are legally important, General Assembly votes show what most countries in the world think about the war.

The plan got 10 votes in favor, while France, Britain, Denmark, Greece, and Slovenia did not vote for or against it. Russia also voted in favor after it failed to change some words in the document and blocked European efforts to add stronger support for Ukraine. Acting US Ambassador to the UN, Dorothy Shea, said that this was an important first step toward peace. She said that countries should now use this to work toward a peaceful future for both Ukraine and Russia.

But some countries are still worried about Trump’s way of handling the issue. Many fear that his focus on Russia could push Ukraine and its supporters away from important peace talks. Britain's UN Ambassador, Barbara Woodward, said that any peace deal must send a strong message that "aggression must not win." She also said the world must remember how the war started and not treat Ukraine and Russia as equal in this conflict.

France also had concerns. French UN Ambassador Nicolas de Riviere said that France supports peace in Ukraine, but the peace deal must be "fair and lasting." He said that peace should not mean forcing Ukraine to give up. On the same day, French President Emmanuel Macron met with Donald Trump in Washington, showing that world leaders are still talking about how to end the war.

At the same time, the General Assembly voted on two other plans. One was supported by Ukraine and European countries, and the other was first made by the US but later changed to include clearer support for Ukraine. The approval of these plans was seen as a big win for Ukraine and its allies.

Before the vote, Ukraine’s Deputy Foreign Minister, Mariana Betsa, reminded countries that this war was not just about Ukraine. She said that every country has the right to exist, choose its own future, and live without fear of being attacked.

The changed US-backed plan in the General Assembly passed with 93 votes in favor, 73 countries choosing not to vote for or against it, and eight votes against it. Russia had tried to change the words in the plan to talk about the "reasons" behind the war, but this was rejected.

The plan introduced by Ukraine and European countries also passed with 93 votes in favor, 65 not voting for or against it, and 18 votes against it. Some of the countries that voted against were Russia, North Korea, and Israel, while the United States voted in favor.

These votes show that countries around the world do not fully agree on how to handle the war. Some want stronger action against Russia, while others prefer to stay neutral or use peaceful talks. The Security Council’s decision marks a big change in US policy, but it is still unclear if it will help bring real peace to Ukraine.
