A terrible accident happened in Anseong, South Korea, on Tuesday. A highway bridge that was being built suddenly collapsed. Four workers died, and six others were badly hurt. The accident took place about 70 kilometers from Seoul. Five big concrete parts, each 50 meters long, fell one after another. A crane was lifting them into place when they suddenly broke apart and came crashing down. All ten workers who were standing on the bridge fell to the ground.

Ko Kyung-man, a fire officer, said that two of the workers who died were from China. Among the six injured workers, five were in very serious condition, and one of them was also Chinese. He explained that the workers were fixing the top part of the bridge when it suddenly collapsed. Since they were all standing on the deck, they had no time to escape and fell from both sides.
A South Korean, YTN, showed a video of the bridge collapsing. The video captured the moment the heavy concrete structure broke and fell. After the accident, rescue teams quickly arrived at the site. They searched through the broken concrete and twisted metal, hoping to find any missing people. Acting President Choi Sang-mok ordered officials to send all possible help for the rescue operation. Nearly 150 emergency workers and three helicopters were sent by the National Fire Agency to assist. The Transport Ministry also sent experts to check the accident site.
South Korea has many workplace accidents, especially in the construction industry. Even though the government introduced a strict law in 2022 to punish companies when workers die at work, accidents still happen. In February, six workers died in a fire at a hotel construction site in Busan. Over 100 people had to be rescued, and 14 workers were saved by a helicopter from the rooftop. In June last year, a fire in a battery factory killed 23 workers because of safety failures.
The South Korean labor ministry reported that 598 workers died in workplace accidents in 2023. Almost half of them worked in construction sites. Although this number is lower than the 644 deaths in 2022, safety problems still remain. Officials have started an investigation to find out why the highway bridge collapsed and whether anyone broke safety rules.
