Afghanistan is grappling with one of its worst hunger crises in decades as the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) reports a significant decline in international aid funding. As the harsh winter sets in, millions, particularly children, find themselves at severe risk due to insufficient food assistance.
The WFP has noted that this marks the first time in several years that a comprehensive winter relief operation cannot be initiated across Afghanistan. Due to a lack of financial resources, the organization is unable to deliver essential nutrition and food aid to those in desperate need, leading to an expected rise in hunger and malnutrition-related deaths, especially among children.
Since the Taliban regained power in 2021 following the withdrawal of foreign troops, Afghanistan's humanitarian plight has continually deteriorated. Reduced aid from international donors has left many families without necessary support, and frequent natural disasters, including earthquakes, have exacerbated the situation by destroying homes and crops.
A staggering 17 million Afghans are currently facing hunger, an increase of about three million from the previous year. This surge is largely attributed to the influx of returnees from Iran and Pakistan, where increased government measures have expedited the repatriation of migrants. Humanitarian organizations stress that Afghanistan lacks the infrastructure and resources to accommodate such a rapid return.
Children are among the most severely affected. The WFP reports child malnutrition at its highest in decades, with approximately 3.7 million Afghan children suffering from acute malnutrition, including over one million in critical condition. Left untreated, severe malnutrition poses an immediate life threat.
Access to care is becoming increasingly challenging as funding for health and nutrition diminishes. Clinics that previously offered medical aid and food supplements are struggling to operate. In remote regions, families often face long and expensive journeys to access necessary assistance.
The situation becomes dire during winter when food supplies become increasingly scarce, and frigid temperatures raise health risks, especially for children. The WFP has cautioned that without prompt intervention, the survival of many children is at stake in the coming months.
The agency has identified a need for over $460 million to extend food assistance to six million vulnerable individuals in Afghanistan, while current funding is a mere 12 percent of the total requirement. UN officials have labelled this funding shortfall as a critical barrier costing lives.
The escalating hunger crisis in Afghanistan underscores the severe impact of reduced international aid. Aid organizations are urgently appealing to donors for swift action, warning that without immediate financial support, suffering will intensify, and countless lives, particularly those of children, will be at risk.
