Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, and Chairman of The Executive Council of Dubai, has approved a major master plan to redevelop Umm Suqeim Beach. The project involves an investment of Dhs500 million and aims to greatly improve Dubai’s public beach facilities and tourism sector.
The project is being carried out by Dubai Municipality and is one of the key initiatives under a wider plan to upgrade public beaches across the emirate. The goal is to turn Umm Suqeim Beach into a well-known destination that attracts people from around the world while still reflecting the local Emirati culture and identity.
Sheikh Hamdan said that the project will bring world-class design and modern planning to the beach. He explained that Dubai continues to focus on innovation, creativity, and the use of advanced technology to create high-quality leisure and tourism spaces that are also sustainable. He added that Dubai’s beaches play a very important role in the city’s global image and tourism appeal. According to him, improving the quality of life for residents and visitors remains a top priority for the leadership.
The redevelopment plan supports Dubai’s long-term strategies, including the Dubai Quality of Life Strategy 2033 and the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan. These strategies focus on creating healthy public spaces, encouraging outdoor activities, improving community wellbeing, and making better use of waterfront areas while supporting sustainable growth.
The project will cover a stretch of 3.1 kilometres and an area of about 445,000 square metres. As part of the redevelopment, the usable beach and activity areas will increase by 30 per cent. This expansion will allow more space for recreation, tourism, and community activities.
To allow people to enjoy the beach in the evening and at night, smart lighting will be installed across 130,000 square metres of the beachfront. The master plan has been prepared after detailed social, environmental, and traffic studies, along with feedback from the community. This approach is meant to ensure proper land use, smooth traffic movement, and long-term sustainability.
Special care has been taken to balance tourism development with environmental protection. The plan also respects the privacy of nearby residential areas, which reflects Dubai’s broader approach to inclusive and well-planned urban development.
Once completed, Umm Suqeim Beach is expected to welcome up to 6 million visitors every year. Major upgrades will be made to infrastructure and services. Parking capacity will increase by 200 per cent, reaching around 2,400 parking spaces. Road access from Jumeirah Street will be improved, and traffic will be managed in a way that reduces congestion in surrounding neighbourhoods.
The plan includes six main entry points to the beach, each designed with architectural styles inspired by the local coastal identity. Other facilities include 10 mobility hubs, 11 taxi pickup and drop-off points, and dedicated paths and services for bicycles and electric scooters. These features will support clean and sustainable transport options.
One of the main attractions of the project will be a 38-metre-high observation tower inspired by Dubai’s maritime history. The tower will act as a landmark and offer visitors a new way to enjoy views of the beach and the surrounding area.
Sustainability and climate protection are key parts of the project. Engineering solutions will be used to manage rising sea levels, including a two-kilometre retaining wall and raised beach levels. An AI-based smart management system will also be introduced to help operate and maintain facilities more efficiently over time.
Dubai Municipality stated that the project follows leadership directives to deliver modern and inclusive tourism infrastructure. The development will support activities throughout the day and combine leisure, sports, and cultural experiences. It will also meet high standards of safety and accessibility, especially for people of determination and senior citizens.
Through this redevelopment, Dubai Municipality aims to attract private sector partners and investors, strengthen public-private partnerships, and support economic growth. Overall, the Umm Suqeim Beach master plan reflects Dubai’s wider vision to turn its beaches into globally recognised landmarks that serve residents, tourists, and future generations.
