Ukraine Launches Drone Attack on Moscow, Shuts Two Airports

Ukraine launched a drone attack targeting Moscow early on Sunday, resulting in the temporary closure of two of the city's major airports. According to Russian officials, at least 17 drones were involved in the strike, which led to significant disruptions.

Mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirmed that 12 of the drones were destroyed in the Ramenskoye and Kolomensky districts of the Moscow region, as well as in Domodedovo city, located southwest of Moscow. The mayor provided an update via the Telegram messaging app, assuring the public that there were no reported casualties or damage at the sites where drone debris had fallen. "Emergency services are on the sites," he added.

The Ramenskoye district, approximately 45 kilometers (30 miles) southeast of the Kremlin, had previously been targeted in September during what was described as Ukraine's largest attack on Moscow. During that attack, Russian air defense units successfully intercepted 20 drones.

In response to the threat, Russia’s federal air transport agency, Rosaviatsia, issued a statement on Telegram, announcing temporary restrictions on the operation of Domodedovo and Zhukovo airports to ensure the safety of civil aviation. These measures began at 0530 GMT, though the agency did not specify how long the restrictions would remain in place.

The drone attack highlights the ongoing tensions in the region, with the conflict between Russia and Ukraine showing no signs of de-escalating. Both sides have frequently used drones as part of their military operations, and such incidents have become increasingly common in the ongoing war.
