UK Faces Severe Cold Snap as Schools Close Due to Heavy Snow

With the coldest temperatures of winter hitting the United Kingdom, many schools have shut down as an intense Arctic air mass looms. Areas like Marham in Norfolk recorded temperatures dropping below -12.5°C, and forecasts predict further snowfall along with severe weather disruptions in the days ahead.

Amber weather warnings for snow are in effect in large regions of northern Scotland until Tuesday night, indicating serious risks for travel, power outages, and safety. Meanwhile, yellow warnings, which signal possible disruptions, are in place across much of the UK until late Tuesday morning.

Forecasters expect central and northern Scotland to see widespread snow accumulation of 5–10cm, with certain areas potentially receiving up to 15cm. Temperatures in the Scottish Highlands dipped to -11.2°C overnight. Residents are encouraged to limit travel and prepare for possible power cuts.

This ongoing cold spell has led to numerous school closures, with over 330 schools in Wales and 170 in Northern Ireland closing on Tuesday. Local authorities from Aberdeenshire, Orkney, and Shetland also confirmed continuous closures, alongside schools in England, including those in Norfolk and Devon.

Transport has also been heavily impacted. Rail services experienced delays due to deep snow obstructing maintenance efforts, and some international services have been suspended. Several ferry routes along Scotland’s west coast were disrupted, and road closures were reported in various parts of Wales. Liverpool John Lennon Airport temporarily halted flights due to icy conditions before resuming operations.

Forecasts indicate that the cold spell will persist, with warnings of strong winds and heavy rainfall later in the week that could add to existing hazards, particularly with a powerful low-pressure system approaching the UK. Southern England, which has mainly escaped snow up to this point, could experience wintry conditions in higher elevations by Thursday and Friday.

Health experts have issued amber cold weather health alerts across England for the remainder of the week, instructing the public, particularly the elderly and vulnerable, to take necessary precautions. This cold snap has also activated financial support through cold weather payments in hundreds of postcode areas facing extended freezing conditions.

As winter conditions worsen, authorities urge the public to remain vigilant, avoid unnecessary travel, and take precautions to ensure safety amid the severe weather.
