The United Arab Emirates has unveiled a major commitment to support Yemen’s recovery, pledging $1 billion to rebuild electricity infrastructure across government-controlled regions. The announcement came during a high-level Emirati delegation’s visit to Aden, signalling one of the largest energy-focused investments in Yemen since the conflict began.
Yemen’s power system—once the backbone of urban life—has been pushed to near collapse after years of civil war. Entire neighborhoods operate on only a few hours of electricity a day, while prolonged blackouts have become part of daily life for millions. In cities like Aden, frustration frequently spills into the streets as residents protest the chronic outages, forced to rely on candles, generators, or nothing at all.
According to details shared by UAE ambassador Mohammed Hamad al-Zaabi, the funding will go toward building a mix of solar, wind, and oil-fired power stations. The diversified approach aims to stabilize electricity supply while reducing pressure on Yemen’s aging fuel-dependent network. The plan was confirmed during an energy forum attended by Yemeni Prime Minister Salem ben Brik, who highlighted the importance of the initiative for the country’s recovery momentum.
While the UAE was once a key member of the Saudi-led coalition involved in the conflict, this new investment marks a shift toward reconstruction rather than military engagement. The relative calm brought on by the UN-brokered truce, which has largely held since 2022, has opened a rare window for major infrastructure projects—something Yemen has struggled to attract amid years of instability.
For ordinary Yemenis, especially those in the south, the commitment offers a sense of long-awaited relief. Restoring consistent electricity is more than an infrastructure upgrade; it is a lifeline that could dramatically improve living conditions, support hospitals and businesses, and help rebuild normalcy after nearly a decade of turmoil. The scale of the investment positions it as one of the most significant steps yet toward stabilizing essential services in war-shattered Yemen.
