Seven people lost their lives while 11 others were injured after two powerful earthquakes struck Davao Oriental and nearby provinces on October 10. The first tremor, measuring magnitude 7.4, hit offshore in the morning, followed by a 6.8 magnitude quake in the evening, shaking communities across the southern Philippines.
The strongest quake, centered off the town of Manay, initially triggered a tsunami warning for coasts within 300 km, which was later lifted. However, the second tremor prompted fresh warnings, with local authorities urging coastal residents to move to higher ground immediately as waves could rise over a meter above normal tide levels.
Reports from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) show that all seven fatalities were in the Davao Region. Among the injured, one person was recorded in Caraga. In total, 3,519 families, or 8,436 individuals across Davao Region and Caraga, have been affected. Of these, 2,468 families—around 7,915 people—have sought shelter in evacuation centers.

Infrastructure suffered notable damage, with 28 houses partially damaged and five completely destroyed. Several road sections and a bridge across Davao Region, Soccsksargen, and Caraga are currently impassable, complicating relief efforts.
The twin quakes left towns near the epicenter with structural damages, forcing communities to reassess safety measures amid fears of aftershocks. Residents remain vigilant, with authorities keeping a close watch on the coastal areas for any sudden changes.
The events highlight the vulnerability of the southern Philippines to seismic activity and underscore the importance of preparedness, evacuation planning, and public awareness during natural disasters. Communities are now focusing on rebuilding, restoring damaged infrastructure, and supporting affected families.
