Emerging Sinkholes Endanger Turkey's Agricultural Landscape Amid Drought

A pressing environmental crisis is unfolding in central Turkey, where hundreds of sinkholes have started to appear, fueled by dwindling rainfall and falling groundwater levels. These sinkholes are cropping up in regions crucial for cultivating staple crops such as maize, wheat, and sugar beet, leading to growing concerns regarding land stability and sustainability.

In the Karapinar district of Konya province, some fields now boast over ten sinkholes each. Meanwhile, ancient, large sinkholes in hilly regions that used to retain water are mostly dry. Geologists watching these developments warn that the situation is deteriorating, reflecting wider climate change effects.

Fetullah Arik, a geology expert from Konya Technical University, noted that the rate of sinkhole emergence has surged in recent years. He stated, “The primary driver is climate change and extended drought conditions, which have been impacting global water resources since the early 2000s. Groundwater levels are decreasing by 4 to 5 meters annually now, compared to just half a meter each year two decades back.”

The accelerating depletion of groundwater is exacerbated by a growing number of unauthorized wells that exploit the subterranean water, with the Konya basin having about 120,000 unlicensed wells, compared to merely 40,000 official ones.

Although there have been no fatalities linked to these sinkholes, their sporadic formation threatens infrastructure, property, and safety. Recent assessments in Karapinar have pinpointed more at-risk locations, but experts remain unable to forecast when new sinkholes might emerge.

Immediate actions to regulate groundwater extraction and tackle the repercussions of climate change are crucial. Without such measures, the region could face an increasing number of sinkholes, jeopardizing land use, communities, and regional stability. Experts stress the need for coordinated efforts to avert further environmental degradation and ensure the long-term integrity of central Turkey’s landscapes.
