This Thanksgiving, American tables may feel the pinch as turkey prices climb to levels not seen in decades. While some small farms like Old Brick Farm near Detroit remain untouched by bird flu or other avian viruses, the national turkey flock has plunged to a 40-year low, impacting availability and cost.
Diseases Shrink Flock
Avian flu has wiped out over 2 million turkeys in recent months, and avian metapneumovirus has further reduced egg production. Farmers are scrambling to secure hatchlings for next year, with many facing delays that could affect holiday supply.
Rising Wholesale Prices
The U.S. Department of Agriculture reports wholesale turkey prices could jump 44% this year. By mid-November, 8–16 pound frozen hens averaged $1.77 per pound, up 81% from last year. Increased consumer demand for turkey, as beef and other meats become pricier, is adding to the pressure.
Grocery Stores Try to Offset Costs
Retailers are offering deals to attract shoppers. Aldi and Kroger advertise full Thanksgiving meals for 10 under $50, while other stores provide discounts or promotions to soften the blow. However, other ingredients are rising due to tariffs on steel and aluminum affecting canned goods, and weather-related drops in cranberry production.
What Shoppers Can Expect
A market basket of 11 common Thanksgiving staples now costs around $59, up 4% from last year. Certain items like pumpkin mix saw price drops, but cranberry sauce surged 38% due to drought and tariffs. Consumers face a mixed picture: the turkey may be the centerpiece, but the rest of the table is costing more.
Holiday Tables Under Pressure
For Americans planning their Thanksgiving feast, it’s a year to shop early, hunt for bargains, and expect a bit more strain on the holiday budget. Even as some farmers maintain healthy flocks, the overall market tells a story of scarcity, higher costs, and adjustments to traditional celebrations.
