After months of critiquing President Joe Biden’s fitness for office, Donald Trump’s campaign is shifting gears, launching a $10 million ad campaign in six key battleground states. This strategic move comes as Trump’s campaign seeks to counteract the growing support and enthusiasm surrounding his new Democratic rival, Kamala Harris.
This is Trump’s largest advertising expenditure since January, when he was contending with fellow Republicans for the party’s nomination. The campaign’s response to the surge in Harris’ popularity underscores a pivotal change in the race dynamics. Since Biden withdrew from the race last week and endorsed Harris, the Vice President has quickly secured significant backing from the Democratic Party and major donors, igniting renewed energy among voters, particularly younger demographics that Biden had struggled to engage.
With the election less than 100 days away, Trump’s campaign has had to pivot from its previous narrative targeting Biden to address the challenge posed by the younger and more dynamic Harris. On Monday, Trump released an ad on his Truth Social platform, leveraging past statements from Harris to depict her as an extreme liberal disconnected from everyday Americans, especially in crucial Rust Belt states.

Harris has countered these attacks, accusing Trump’s campaign of distorting her record. Sarafina Chitika, a spokesperson for Harris, emphasized that the Vice President has played a central role in advancing the Biden-Harris administration’s significant legislative achievements and has worked across party lines to achieve this.
In response to Harris' candidacy, Trump has been scrutinized for his legal troubles, including felony convictions related to a New York hush-money trial and other criminal charges. Harris has utilized these issues to highlight Trump’s controversies and criticize his role in supporting anti-abortion legislation in Republican-led states.
Adding to the ad frenzy, MAGA Inc., a super PAC supporting Trump, has announced a $32 million ad campaign targeting Harris in three states, criticizing her record and positions. Unlike presidential campaigns, super PACs face no limits on donations, allowing them to mount substantial advertising efforts. However, they cannot coordinate directly with campaign strategies.
On the other side, Future Forward, a Democratic super PAC, is launching a substantial $50 million initiative to support Harris in Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin—states deemed critical for the upcoming election due to their potential to sway voting outcomes.
Harris’ campaign reported a significant fundraising boost last week, raising $200 million. Despite her high profile, there is an ongoing concern about whether Harris’ policy positions are sufficiently known to voters. Pollster Evan Roth Smith from Blueprint noted that Harris faces the challenge of defining her image before the Trump campaign solidifies a negative perception among voters.
Brian Schimming, chair of the Wisconsin Republican Party, highlighted the strategy of the Trump campaign: “It’s about making it clear that if voters weren’t satisfied with Joe Biden, they are unlikely to find Kamala Harris any better.”
During the 2020 election, Harris adopted progressive stances on issues like immigration and healthcare to appeal to liberal voters. However, as Vice President, she has aligned with the Biden administration’s more moderate policies, aiming to balance progressive goals with pragmatic governance.
