On Sunday, US President Donald Trump stated that American intelligence couldn't find any proof that Ukraine had targeted a residence associated with Russian President Vladimir Putin in a recent drone episode, effectively dismissing Moscow’s assertions.
Russia accused Ukraine of deploying drones near Putin’s official residence in the Novgorod region, claiming that air defense systems intercepted these drones and admonishing Kyiv for conducting such an operation amidst delicate peace talks.
This allegation emerged shortly after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s visit to Florida for discussions with Trump, where they focused on a US-supported framework aimed at concluding the ongoing war. Zelenskyy vehemently rejected Russia’s claims.
While traveling back to Washington from Florida, Trump informed reporters that US intelligence had reviewed the matter and determined that Putin's residence was not actually targeted.
Trump noted that something might have transpired in the vicinity, but there was no confirmation of an assault directed at the Russian leader's residence. After further checks, US officials remained unconvinced that such an attack occurred.
Earlier in the week, Trump expressed concern following discussions with Putin over the phone, mentioning his displeasure with the accusations. However, his tone shifted, casting doubt on the reliability of Russia’s narrative and suggesting it might hinder peace negotiations.
European authorities have also rejected Russia’s account, suggesting that the allegation could be an attempt to undermine the negotiations.
Trump continues to face challenges in fulfilling his campaign promise of swiftly resolving the Ukraine conflict, expressing annoyance toward both Moscow and Kyiv. While both Trump and Zelenskyy described their recent discussions as productive, Russia has signaled that hostilities will persist unless its demands are met, including control over eastern Ukrainian regions and restrictions on Ukraine’s military capabilities.
