Gaza witnessed fresh violence on Saturday as Israeli airstrikes killed six people, even as U.S. President Donald Trump called for an immediate halt to the bombings. The strikes targeted Gaza City and Khan Younis, leaving four dead in a home and two others in the south, local authorities and medical teams reported.
Trump, who unveiled a 20-point plan to end the two-year-old Gaza conflict, urged both sides to move toward a ceasefire. He indicated that Hamas is ready to engage in peace, release hostages, and accept certain conditions outlined in the U.S.-led proposal.
“Israel must immediately stop the bombing of Gaza, so that we can get the hostages out safely and quickly,” Trump wrote, emphasizing that the plan could pave the way for broader Middle East peace.

Israel Prepares for First Phase of Hostage Release
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office announced that Israel is preparing for the immediate implementation of the first stage of Trump’s plan, which focuses on the release of hostages held by Hamas. Israeli media reported that political leaders instructed the military to reduce offensive operations, signaling a cautious step toward easing hostilities.
The military chief of staff confirmed readiness to implement the first phase but did not clarify the extent of ongoing military action. Families of hostages have long pressured Netanyahu to initiate negotiations, highlighting the human toll of the conflict.
Hamas Responds Amid Global Pressure
Hamas, controlling Gaza, responded to Trump’s plan with cautious engagement, weighing acceptance against potential repercussions. The group has been under international scrutiny since the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel, which left over 1,200 Israelis dead and saw 251 individuals taken hostage. Current estimates suggest 48 hostages remain in Gaza, with around 20 confirmed alive.
The Israeli offensive has taken a devastating toll on Gaza. Health authorities report over 66,000 deaths, mostly civilians, widespread destruction of infrastructure, and severe shortages of food and medical aid.
Balancing Domestic Pressure and International Expectations
Netanyahu faces a delicate balancing act. Domestically, he contends with public fatigue over the war and the urgent pleas of hostage families, while hardline coalition members resist any pause in military action. Internationally, Trump’s involvement has thrust the conflict into the global spotlight, with calls for diplomacy and humanitarian relief mounting.
As Gaza reels under both military strikes and humanitarian crises, the next few days are expected to be critical in determining whether Trump’s plan can break the cycle of violence and initiate meaningful negotiations.
