US President Donald Trump announced he hopes to meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in 2025 while also opening the door to further trade discussions with South Korea. His remarks came as he welcomed South Korea’s newly elected president, Lee Jae Myung, to the White House.
“I’d like to meet him this year,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office. He added, “I look forward to meeting with Kim Jong Un in the appropriate future.”
Trade Ties and Investments
The US and South Korea recently reached a trade deal in July. The deal aims to protect South Korean exports from higher US tariffs. However, disputes continue over issues such as nuclear energy, military spending, and the implementation of a $350 billion investment pledge from South Korea to the United States.
After their Oval Office meeting, President Lee participated in a business forum with senior US officials and leaders from South Korean and American companies. During the visit, Korean Air announced an order for 103 Boeing planes, marking the largest aircraft purchase in the airline’s history.
North Korea’s Reaction
North Korea has not responded to Trump’s latest remarks. State media, however, criticized US-South Korea joint military drills, claiming they show Washington’s desire to “occupy” the Korean Peninsula and target nearby countries.
Since taking office in January, Trump’s repeated calls for diplomacy with Kim Jong Un have been ignored. Past efforts during his previous term from 2017 to 2021 did not result in a nuclear deal with North Korea.
Diplomatic Approach of South Korea’s President
President Lee avoided confrontational politics during his visit, unlike the highly publicized trips by Ukraine’s President and South Africa’s President earlier this year. Lee complimented Trump on his golf skills and interior design, even mentioning he had read Trump’s 1987 book, Trump: The Art of the Deal, to prepare for the meeting.
Lee expressed hope that Trump could bring peace to the Korean Peninsula. Speaking in Korean, he said, “I hope you can bring peace to the Korean Peninsula, so that you can meet Kim Jong Un, build a Trump World in North Korea, and play a role as a historic peacemaker.”
The South Korean president also invited Trump to attend the upcoming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in October, suggesting the US president attempt a meeting with Kim during the trip.
Security Concerns and Nuclear Threat
After the summit, Lee warned that despite strict sanctions, North Korea continues to develop nuclear weapons. He estimated that North Korea could build 10 to 20 nuclear warheads per year. North Korea still needs to perfect reentry technology to deliver these warheads to the US via long-range missiles.
South Korea relies heavily on US military support, which includes troops stationed in the country and a nuclear deterrent. Trump has criticized Seoul as a “money machine” that benefits from US protection while contributing less to defense costs.
Defense and Military Spending
Trump reportedly pressed President Lee on increasing South Korea’s defense spending, including support for the 28,500 US troops stationed in the country. When asked if troop numbers might be reduced for greater US flexibility, Trump responded cautiously, suggesting South Korea might give the US ownership of “the land where we have the big fort,” likely referring to Camp Humphreys, a major US Army base.
Lee indicated it would be difficult for South Korea to agree to such flexible use of US forces, especially regarding China-related operations.
Legal and Political Tensions
Trump mentioned he would raise intelligence about South Korean investigations targeting churches and a military base. Earlier in August, South Korean police raided Sarang Jeil Church, led by evangelical preacher Jun Kwang-hoon, who had supported the ousted former president Yoon Suk Yeol. Prosecutors also investigated attempts by Yoon to declare martial law, which included searches at a US-South Korean joint military base.
The meeting between Trump and Lee highlighted complex issues in the region, from trade and military cooperation to North Korea’s nuclear ambitions. While Trump expressed optimism about a potential meeting with Kim Jong Un, the path to diplomacy remains uncertain. South Korea continues to balance its security reliance on the US with domestic political considerations, all while monitoring North Korea’s growing nuclear capabilities.
