During a recent gala in Washington, U.S. President Donald Trump expressed admiration for Canada, although he remained unclear about plans to resume trade negotiations. He described his meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum as “very good” and “productive.”
Carney's office characterized the talks as “constructive.” However, when probed about reviving stalled trade discussions—halted after Ontario launched anti-tariff campaigns—Trump simply replied, “we’ll work it out.”
While noting Canada’s tough trading stance, Trump emphasized his friendly relationship with Prime Minister Carney, even light-heartedly joking about Canada's expertise in ice hockey.
Earlier this year, tariffs on Canada and Mexico were imposed by Trump, impacting steel, aluminum, automobiles, lumber, and copper. Canada faced duties as high as 35%, while Mexico encountered 25%. The Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) provides some protection against wider tariffs, yet will face a required review next year. If a consensus isn’t reached regarding renewal, the agreement could lapse in 2036.
Both nations are actively exploring avenues to minimize tariffs and uphold duty-free trade amid a volatile U.S. trade policy environment. Although Trump’s remarks suggest a path to cooperation, the outlook for North American trade negotiations remains precarious, influenced heavily by tariffs and ongoing discussions.
