U.S. President Donald Trump has stressed that the decision over Taiwan's future ultimately rests in the hands of Chinese President Xi Jinping, yet he firmly cautioned against any attempts to disrupt the existing circumstances in the area.
In a recent interview, Trump noted that Xi considers Taiwan as part of China, insisting that the path China chooses lies with him. Nevertheless, he asserted that he would be “very unhappy” should China decide to change the current status surrounding Taiwan.
Trump highlighted that he has communicated his worries directly to Xi, expressing his belief that China will refrain from military action towards Taiwan during his tenure, which is set to continue until 2029. He indicated that while such concerns might arise with a succeeding U.S. president, he doesn’t anticipate such actions while he remains in office.
These comments were part of a wider conversation regarding global conflicts, with Trump asserting that the situation in Taiwan differs from other international disputes, stressing that Taiwan doesn't pose a direct threat to China.
China asserts that Taiwan is its sovereign territory and considers the issue a domestic matter. Beijing has not dismissed the possibility of using force to reclaim the island. However, Taiwan refutes China’s claims and functions independently as a self-governed democracy.
Although the U.S. does not officially recognize Taiwan diplomatically, it remains the island's strongest international ally. U.S. law mandates Washington to assist Taiwan in its self-defense, creating a long-standing source of tension between the U.S. and China.
In light of escalating regional tensions, Trump has refrained from providing clear statements on how the U.S. would react if conflicts intensify. He continues to advocate for dialogue and deterrence, maintaining his conviction that no significant actions will take place during his administration.
