Major airlines in the U.S. are rolling out extensive travel waivers due to an aggressive winter storm expected to cause significant air travel disruptions across many regions. Heavy snowfall, sleet, freezing rain, and strong winds are predicted to spread across nearly twenty states, complicating operations and posing risks for travelers as the busy weekend draws near.
Weather authorities have cautioned that the extreme weather could lead to severe challenges. The National Weather Service has indicated that this mix may result in perilous road conditions, potential power outages, and damage to vegetation, especially in southeastern areas. Northern parts are likely to experience heavier snowfall. AccuWeather warns that temperatures could plummet to levels not seen since 2021, heightening the possibility of flight delays and cancellations.
In light of the approaching storm, airlines have started making schedule alterations. Delta Air Lines has already canceled flights at select airports in five states, expressing concerns over icy runways, snow-blanketed taxiways, and strong winds impacting operations. The airline indicated that these weather conditions might affect flights across the Southern Plains and Southeast, including its key hub in Atlanta. Delta announced that affected travelers will be automatically rebooked on the next available flights and can modify bookings without incurring extra fees under its waiver policy.
Forecasts predict extensive and prolonged impacts. AccuWeather estimates thousands of flight cancellations might occur between Saturday and Monday, with travel booking company Hopper projecting over 15,000 flights could face delays as airlines endeavor to manage their resources during the storm.
Other major airlines are also taking precautions. Southwest Airlines announced potential disruptions in parts of the South and East, allowing passengers to rebook or travel standby within a two-week timeframe without penalties. American Airlines has broadened its flexible travel guidelines across its network, including key hubs like Dallas-Fort Worth and Charlotte, providing passengers with additional options to modify plans.
United Airlines has issued a travel waiver for extensive areas in the Mid-Atlantic, Northeast, Carolinas, and Ohio Valley, which encompasses operations at Newark and nearby airports in Washington. Customers can change their travel dates without incurring fees, provided they maintain the same route and cabin class.
JetBlue's waiver targets the Northeast, covering airports in New York and Boston, with no fees for changes or cancellations for travelers flying to/from 11 cities. Frontier Airlines permits refund requests if flights are canceled or delayed beyond specific time frames. Spirit Airlines has also eliminated modification fees and fare differences for travel between January 23 and January 25 involving 13 cities.
Airlines are advising passengers to closely track their flight statuses and utilize mobile apps and official airline websites for the quickest rebooking services. Many travelers are already making adjustments; Hopper recorded a 17 percent uptick in customers seeking disruption assistance for the upcoming weekend.
Experts remind travelers that areas even far from the storm's center could still feel its impact. Key airports on the West Coast, as well as hubs in Denver, Chicago, and Minneapolis, might face delays due to aircraft and crew shortages stemming from the storm's far-reaching effects.
As winter weather becomes more severe, travelers are encouraged to stay updated, remain adaptable, and prepare for possible delays or cancellations. The next few days promise to challenge both airlines and passengers as one of the season’s strongest storms sweeps across the United States.
