A tragic crane collapse occurred on a busy road in Samut Sakhon province, near Bangkok, on Thursday, resulting in the death of two individuals and injuring five others, according to police reports. The crane fell onto vehicles below while part of an elevated highway construction project.
The incident trapped motorists and caused significant damage. Local police swiftly responded to the scene to aid the injured and ensure the area was secure.
This event comes on the heels of a devastating crane accident in northeastern Thailand that claimed the lives of 32 train passengers just one day earlier. On Wednesday, in Nakhon Ratchasima province, a crane linked to a high-speed rail construction project toppled over, derailing a train. This led to 66 injuries among the 195 passengers on board, triggering a comprehensive inquiry into safety regulations for major infrastructure projects.
Authorities in Samut Sakhon have pointed out the recent crane collapse as a reminder of the ongoing safety issues plaguing Thailand’s construction sector, which has seen a string of fatal accidents in recent years. They are urging construction firms to adhere strictly to safety protocols and have committed to a detailed investigation to identify the cause of Thursday’s mishap.
Emergency responders acted quickly to clear the wreckage and provide medical assistance to those injured. Local officials also advised residents and drivers in the vicinity to steer clear of the site while rescue and inspection efforts were underway.
The government is increasingly under fire regarding the safety measures in place for infrastructure projects, especially after consecutive crane-related tragedies that threaten both workers and civilians. Investigators will be scrutinizing equipment, construction methodologies, and adherence to safety guidelines to avert future incidents.
