Colombo/Dubai, 30 August 2025 — The Tourism Service Providers Association of Sri Lanka has strongly objected to a proposed scheme that would allow tourists to obtain local driving licenses for Rs. 2,000. At a press conference held today, representatives warned of large-scale protests next Friday if the initiative is not immediately withdrawn.

Concerns Over Industry Impact

Amila Athukorala, a representative of the association, said the policy unfairly disadvantages stakeholders in the tourism sector. “We urge the government to suspend this process without delay,” he said, adding that the association is prepared to launch a protest campaign should the scheme continue.

Licensing Without Proper Criteria

Milroy Fernando, Vice President of the National Tourist Drivers Association, noted that issuing driving licenses without medical or vision checks could undermine safety and professional standards. He referred to countries such as Thailand, where tourists must undergo strict procedures before being licensed.

Call for Immediate Action

Gayan Thittawala, also representing the association, reiterated that a protest would be staged next Friday if no action is taken. He stressed that the government would be accountable for any resulting harm to Sri Lanka’s tourism industry.

Road Safety Issues Raised

Association member Anura Kumara expressed concern that permitting untested drivers from overseas to use Sri Lankan roads could heighten accident risks. Sri Lanka already records a significant number of road fatalities annually, he pointed out.

Broader Industry Challenges

Participants also discussed the need to ensure that tourism delivers measurable economic benefit to the country. They emphasized that the sector cannot afford further setbacks, urging authorities to engage with stakeholders to safeguard its future.

Government Response Awaited

As of now, officials have not issued a formal response to the concerns raised. Industry representatives caution that unless the matter is resolved swiftly, the tourism sector could face serious disruption.
