On Sunday, Ueno Zoo in Tokyo became a hub of emotion as thousands gathered to bid farewell to its final giant pandas, Xiao Xiao and Lei Lei. The twins are set to depart for China on Tuesday, leading fans to queue for hours to catch a glimpse of these beloved creatures one last time.
Born in 2021 to parents Shin Shin and Ri Ri, who were sent to Japan from China for breeding and research, this marks a significant moment as Japan prepares to be without giant pandas for the first time since 1972. The loss of these pandas interrupts a long-standing tradition that started with the normalization of relations between Japan and China.
Giant pandas have long served as symbols of goodwill from China, which offers these rare animals to countries globally as a friendly gesture. China retains ownership of the pandas and their cubs, with host nations paying hefty fees for the custody.
The timing of this farewell coincides with escalating tensions between Tokyo and Beijing, particularly after Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi stated that Japan might consider military action should China attack Taiwan. This statement has drawn severe backlash from Beijing, which views Taiwan as an integral part of its territory and has suggested it may resort to forceful solutions.
With these diplomatic strains intensifying, recent panda loans have also been affected by ongoing trade discussions. China's recent tightening of rare earth exports to Japan raises concerns about future collaborations, including potential new panda loans.
For many Japanese citizens, the pandas transcended their animal status, embodying cultural and diplomatic bonds. One mother expressed hopes that her son would cherish memories of visiting the pandas since infancy. Others reflected on feelings of nostalgia as they gathered to say goodbye to the twins.
As Xiao Xiao and Lei Lei prepare for their journey home, Japan enters a unique period without these cherished giant pandas, marking a complex phase in its relationship with China.
