Supreme Court to Hear NEET UG 2024 Irregularities Pleas

On Monday, the Supreme Court is set to review a series of petitions concerning alleged irregularities in the NEET UG 2024 exam, which took place earlier this year. This hearing follows the recent release of city-wise and centre-wise results by the National Testing Agency (NTA) amid accusations of marking discrepancies and paper leaks.

A bench comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra will consider the case on July 22. The court will address 40 petitions, including those filed by the NTA requesting the transfer of cases pending in various high courts to the Supreme Court. This move aims to consolidate litigation related to the NEET-UG issues.

The Supreme Court had previously adjourned hearings on July 11 due to pending responses from the Centre and NTA regarding pleas for exam cancellation, re-tests, and investigations into alleged malpractices. During the July 8 hearing, the court highlighted that the integrity of the NEET-UG 2024 had been compromised. However, the Centre's affidavit indicated that while there were instances of irregularities, there was no evidence of widespread malpractice or anomalous high scores.

An analysis of the results released by the NTA on June 4, ahead of the scheduled release date, suggested that students who were suspected of benefiting from irregularities did not perform exceptionally well. Conversely, top scorers were concentrated in major coaching hub cities.

The NEET UG 2024 was conducted on May 5, with over 23.33 lakh students taking part across 4,750 centres in 571 cities, including 14 international locations.
