Energy Minister Tim Hodgson has extended his apologies to the Coastal First Nations following remarks he made about a proposed virtual meeting regarding a potential bitumen pipeline to northern British Columbia's coastline. This coalition of nine First Nations expressed their dissatisfaction with the short notice for the meeting.

Hodgson had initially proposed using Zoom for a discussion regarding the project, which stems from a recent agreement between the federal and Alberta governments aimed at facilitating the pipeline's progress. During a Thursday interview, he remarked, “It’s called Zoom… I think that’s what we’re using, David,” which garnered criticism for seemingly dismissing the group’s concerns.

Approximately 24 hours later, Hodgson took to social media, stating: “My comments last night about a virtual meeting with Coastal First Nations were a poor choice of words, which I regret. I have reached out to them directly to apologize and look forward to an in-person meeting at their convenience.”

Marilyn Slett, who serves as president of the Coastal First Nations, labeled Hodgson’s initial comments as “deeply disrespectful” and noted a clear lack of understanding regarding their communities. She highlighted that the Coastal First Nations have consistently partnered with federal and provincial authorities on environmental initiatives, including the protection of the Great Bear Rainforest and adjacent waters, which have provided lasting employment and significant contributions to the Canadian economy.

Slett underscored that the success of such initiatives depends on respectful communication and effective government relations, saying: “We expect better from this government moving forward.”

This apology arises amid ongoing discussions about pipeline development and climate policies, especially following the departure of former Environment Minister Steven Guilbeault. Hodgson defended the agreement with Alberta, emphasizing its inclusion of climate-centric strategies like the industrial carbon tax, while clarifying that no pipeline currently exists.

This incident sheds light on the necessity for thoughtful communication with Indigenous groups, particularly concerning projects that can have profound environmental and economic repercussions.
