Dubai, September 29, 2025 – India secured their ninth Asia Cup title on Sunday, defeating Pakistan by five wickets in a thrilling T20 final at the Dubai International Stadium. Young batter Tilak Varma played a match-defining innings, steering India from 10 for 2 to a victorious finish under high pressure.
However, the post-match celebrations were overshadowed by a trophy controversy. India declined to accept the Asia Cup trophy from Pakistan’s Interior Minister and Asian Cricket Council president, Mohsin Naqvi. The ceremony, delayed by over an hour, ended with India walking off the field without the silverware. Captain Suryakumar Yadav confirmed the decision was made entirely by the team, without external pressure. India had reportedly offered to accept the trophy from Emirates Cricket Board vice-chairman Khalid Al Zarooni, but this option was blocked.

Tilak Varma’s innings was the highlight of the match. Walking in at 10 for 2, after Suryakumar Yadav’s dismissal, Tilak anchored the chase alongside Sanju Samson and Shivam Dube. He scored a half-century off 41 balls and struck crucial boundaries in the final overs, ensuring India crossed the target with five wickets remaining. Rinku Singh sealed the victory with the winning boundary, scoring off his first delivery of the tournament.
Earlier, India had bowled Pakistan out for 146, with a spirited performance from the bowlers helping restrict the opposition after Pakistan was 84 for 1. Pakistan’s Faheem Ashraf and Shaheen Shah Afridi had made early breakthroughs, removing key Indian batters including Abhishek Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav.
Tilak, who had been in the shadows of senior players like Suryakumar Yadav and Sanju Samson, showcased maturity beyond his years. Cricket experts praised him for handling pressure effectively, citing his IPL experience with Mumbai Indians as key preparation.
India’s victory adds to their record tally in the Asia Cup, underscoring the team’s dominance in the region. Despite the trophy controversy, the win is expected to boost morale ahead of upcoming international fixtures.
The Asian Cricket Council has not issued an official statement regarding the trophy dispute. India’s team is scheduled to return home on Monday.
