An earthquake registering 3.0 on the Richter scale was detected in Tibet on Saturday, according to official seismic reports.

The quake struck at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers, potentially causing more noticeable shaking at the surface compared to deeper quakes. Located at approximately latitude 28.37°N and longitude 88.02°E, the tremor was reported at 03:40:55 IST.

While the magnitude was moderate and no immediate damage or injuries were reported, shallow earthquakes are often more alarming since their seismic waves travel shorter distances and are felt more intensely at ground level.

The Tibetan Plateau remains susceptible to such seismic events due to the persistent tectonic activities in the vicinity. The region lies near a significant fault zone, where the Indian tectonic plate is continuously colliding with the Eurasian plate. This prolonged interaction contributes to the formation and uplift of the Himalayas, rendering the area prone to frequent earthquakes.

Experts explain that the high elevation of Tibet is a result of the Earth's crust thickening over millions of years due to pressure from the ongoing plate collision. Periodically, accumulated stress is released, manifesting as earthquakes.

Seismic activities in the plateau are a result of both strike-slip faulting and normal fault movements. The geography predominantly extends in an east-west manner, featuring numerous rift zones and shifting fault lines.

In northern Tibet, strike-slip faulting prevails and is linked to some of the strongest quakes in the region, including those reaching magnitudes of 8.0 or more.

Conversely, southern Tibet experiences east-west crustal extension with normal faults trending north-south. Although generally resulting in smaller quakes, these can still produce tremors across extensive areas.

Research utilizing satellite data has pinpointed seven significant north-south rifts and normal faults in southern Tibet. These rifts are believed to have started developing roughly 4 to 8 million years ago, coinciding with increased tectonic stretching.

Historical data on normal fault-related earthquakes in Tibet shows magnitudes ranging from 5.9 to 7.1, including a series of events documented in 2008 across various locations on the plateau.

The recent mild tremor serves as a reminder of the region's dynamic tectonic environment, where earthquakes are a common occurrence.
