Dubai:An Exclusive Story from “Voices of UAE: Stories That Inspire.
In the culturally rich and dynamic city of Dubai, where stories from around the world find a home, Ana S. Gad has made a profound impact. Known as a writer, researcher, digital artist, and passionate advocate for cultural diversity, Ana’s journey from her native Serbia to becoming an integral part of Dubai’s creative landscape is extraordinary.
Ana S. Gad is the pen name of Dr. Ana Stjelja, a name synonymous with creativity, intellect, and compassion. Her accomplishments include over 30 authored books, exhibitions of her digital art, and founding platforms like the Association Alia Mundi and Sands and City Online Magazine. Yet, behind these accolades lies a story of resilience, inspiration, and an unwavering belief in the power of art and culture to bring people together. When asked about her childhood in Serbia, Ana spoke with a blend of fondness and deep reflection. “Growing up in Serbia was both enriching and challenging,” she shared. “It’s a country with breathtaking natural beauty and a deep cultural heritage that nurtured my creativity and worldview. My early years were filled with joy, stability, and a strong sense of connection with my roots.”
Ana’s childhood experiences instilled resilience and empathy, which now define her work. “My upbringing taught me the values of love, tolerance, and an appreciation for humanity’s shared experiences,” she reflected. “These values became the foundation for my lifelong commitment to promoting cultural diversity.” Ana’s passion for literature blossomed early. “I started writing when I was seven,” she recalled with a smile. “By the time I was eleven, I had already written a book of poetry.” Encouraged by her parents, Ana nurtured her love for writing alongside her talent for languages. Over the years, she mastered nine languages, including English, Russian, French, Spanish, and Arabic.
Ana’s poetry reflects her deeply personal connection to life, nature, and the human spirit. In one of her poignant poems, she writes:
I ought to release a bird
To spread my goodness to the world
I ought to hide my tears
Under the umbrella in the middle of the storm
I ought to tell you "you were right"
I ought to tell you "forgive me"
I ought to hug willow tree
I ought to pay tribute to fairies
Wondering in the woods of dreams
I ought to sleep so deep
As a sleeping beauty
When I wake up
To see different world
Different myself, I ought...

This poem serves as a glimpse into Ana’s soul—a journey of self-reflection, transformation, and a deep yearning for a world united by kindness and compassion. “Writing and languages were always at the core of who I am,” Ana said. “They opened doors to new cultures and perspectives, shaping my path toward literature.” Her exploration of Sufism began during her graduate studies at Belgrade University, where she encountered Sufi poetry. “I was instantly captivated by its essence,” Ana explained. “The celebration of love for God and universal human values resonated deeply with me.” Sufism not only enriched her spiritual perspective but also inspired her  Master’s thesis in 2009. “It’s a journey I continue to this day,” Ana said. “It taught me to find connections between my own faith, Orthodox Christianity, and other traditions, fostering a sense of unity and compassion.”
Ana’s experiences growing up in a multicultural environment became the cornerstone of her work. She channeled her belief in cultural harmony into founding Alia Mundi, an association dedicated to celebrating diversity. “I firmly believe that we are united in our shared humanity,” she said. “Through my work, I aim to inspire others to embrace this vision of an inclusive and harmonious world.” Moving to Dubai in 2024 marked a transformative chapter in Ana’s journey. “Dubai’s energy is dynamic and inspiring—a city that never sleeps. Finding my place here took time, but it has been an incredible experience,” she said. “Dubai is the epitome of diversity and innovation, and I’m grateful for how it has embraced me.” Ana’s contributions to Dubai’s cultural scene have been remarkable. From exhibiting her digital artworks at prestigious venues to donating books to libraries and cultural centers, she has made a meaningful impact. She was also an honored participant in the ELF Dubai poetry event in July 2024, where her evocative verses captivated audiences and further solidified her presence in Dubai’s cultural sphere.
For Ana, art and literature are universal languages. “They’re like bridges,” she said passionately. “They transcend borders and bring people together. All the meaningful connections I’ve made have been through art and literature.” When asked what inspires her, Ana’s answer was poetic. “A warm sunset, a chubby cloud, a vibrant flower, or even a stray cat,” she said with a laugh. “Nature has a way of purifying the soul and filling it with positivity.” She also finds inspiration in the people she meets. “Every person brings a lesson,” Ana explained. “Positive encounters teach me what to cherish, and challenging ones show me how to grow.” Ana’s vision remains rooted in service and creativity. “My goal is to continue contributing to the world through my work,” she said. “I believe everyone is born with a mission, and our task is to discover it and dedicate ourselves to it.” Her dream is to leave a legacy of compassion, empathy, and unity. “It’s not about personal achievements,” Ana said. “It’s about fulfilling a higher purpose and making the world a better place.”
To young people aspiring to make a difference, Ana offered heartfelt advice. “Stay true to your passions and values,” she said. “Pursue what resonates with your heart and never let external pressures derail you. Small acts of goodness can create ripples that last.” Ana’s belief in a kinder, more connected world shines through in everything she does. Whether through her art, writing, or cultural initiatives, she continues to inspire those around her.
Dr. Ana Stjelja, through her pen name Ana S. Gad, exemplifies the spirit of resilience, creativity, and compassion that defines the UAE’s multicultural landscape. Her story is a testament to the power of art and literature in building bridges, fostering unity, and inspiring humanity. In her own words: “Art and culture are the invisible threads that weave humanity together. They remind us of what truly matters—love, compassion, and the shared beauty of our diverse world.”
