England secured a thrilling four-wicket victory over New Zealand in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Super Eights, successfully chasing a target of 160 with three balls to spare on Friday.
Rehan Ahmed and Will Jacks played a match-winning role with a quick 44-run partnership at a crucial stage of the game. The pair shifted momentum in England’s favor by smashing 22 runs in the 18th over, putting the pressure back on New Zealand and guiding their team to victory.
Earlier, New Zealand posted 159 for 7 after a strong start. However, England’s spinners pulled things back in the middle overs, slowing down the scoring rate and preventing the Kiwis from setting a bigger total.
While chasing, England’s top order struggled and lost wickets at regular intervals, making the contest intense. But the calm and aggressive approach from Ahmed and Jacks ensured that the two-time champions crossed the finish line comfortably.
With this win, England topped Group Two after winning all three of their Super Eights matches. They had already secured a place in the semi-finals before this game.
Meanwhile, New Zealand’s hopes of reaching the last four now depend on the outcome of the match between Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
