In response to the recent Nipah virus outbreak in India, Thailand has stepped up its health surveillance and screening protocols. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul announced that screening measures akin to those used during the Covid-19 pandemic are being implemented to safeguard against the virus entering the nation.

Currently, no Nipah cases have been detected in Thailand, but officials are exercising caution. The Ministry of Public Health is proactively providing information to the public to alleviate unnecessary anxiety while ensuring transparency.

The Nipah virus predominantly transmits through bodily fluids rather than infected air. It can be transmitted from animals to humans and via contaminated food or direct human contact. To reduce risk, individuals are encouraged to practice good hygiene, including eating cooked food, using serving utensils, and washing hands frequently.

Moreover, the Prime Minister has suggested minimizing close physical contact and promoting non-contact greetings, a practice encouraged during the pandemic, to reduce transmission risks.

Screening for air travelers arriving from India, particularly from West Bengal, commenced on January 26 at Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang Airports. Passengers from these high-risk regions are given "Health Beware Cards" detailing symptoms to monitor, such as fever, headaches, muscle aches, sore throat, cough, breathing difficulties, confusion, and seizures.

Travelers exhibiting symptoms or those who have encountered bats, sick animals, or infected persons within 21 days prior to arrival in Thailand are strongly encouraged to seek immediate medical care and alert health authorities regarding their travel background.

Recognizing the Nipah virus as a high-risk pathogen due to its epidemic capacity, the World Health Organization has warned that Nipah infection can vary from mild illness to severe respiratory issues and potentially fatal encephalitis, with fatality rates ranging from 40% to 75%, influenced by healthcare quality and outbreak circumstances.

Thailand is committed to maintaining rigorous health surveillance on incoming travelers from regions where Nipah cases have been reported, ensuring public safety and preventing any local transmission.
