Every year on National Army Day, observed on January 15, India pays tribute to the courage, commitment, and sacrifices of its military personnel. This day marks a historic milestone—1949—when Lieutenant General K.M. Cariappa became the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army, highlighting a significant chapter in India's defense history.
For many, the Indian Army symbolizes the frontline defense against external aggressions, ensuring the nation's borders are secure and engaging in combat when necessary. While these functions remain crucial, the Army also plays several vital roles that often go unrecognized. From humanitarian efforts to initiatives for national development, the Indian Army operates extensively beyond the battlefield.
As we commemorate the army's storied legacy, it’s essential to highlight these lesser-known but impactful responsibilities that showcase the Army's role as not just a defender but also a vital supporter of India's growth and stability.
First Responders in Crisis
In times of natural calamities—whether it be floods, landslides, cyclones, or earthquakes—the Indian Army often emerges as the first structured response team. Their actions are both timely and lifesaving.
A prime example of this dedication is Operation Jal Rahat 2, initiated during the 2025 monsoon season. Inundated regions like Himachal Pradesh and Assam faced severe floods, with Army units swiftly dispatched to conduct evacuations, deliver emergency medical aid, and provide essential supplies to those stranded. Their efforts were instrumental in saving countless lives and reducing infrastructure collapse.
These relief operations require detailed planning and efficient logistics, especially under challenging conditions. The capacity of the Army to work in tandem with civil authorities allows local administrators to focus on broader recovery tasks as specialized teams manage rescue and medical support. Their approach, whether in airlifting isolated villagers or constructing temporary bridges, truly embodies the motto of 'Service Before Self.'
Engineering Progress Across India
Given India's varied geography—from deserts to highlands—there's an urgent need for solid infrastructure. The Army plays a crucial but often underappreciated role in constructing and maintaining vital infrastructure, particularly in remote or border regions where civilian contractors face difficulties.
The Corps of Engineers is a shining example of this commitment. Their responsibilities extend beyond military structures, involving the creation and upkeep of essential infrastructure like roads and bridges that connect isolated areas with urban hubs. This not only enhances defense logistics but also fosters socio-economic growth in these hard-to-reach locales.
The projects they undertake often require overcoming rugged terrain and inclement weather, turning these obstacles into avenues for better connectivity and industrial stimulation. Their work integrates these regions into the national fabric, enhancing access to healthcare, education, and economic opportunities.
India's Global Representation
The Indian Army has a rich record of participating in United Nations peacekeeping missions, playing a vital role in maintaining peace in war-torn areas worldwide. Despite the importance of these initiatives, they often receive scant attention in domestic news outlets.
Executing peacekeeping operations requires an intricate balance of military professionalism and diplomatic finesse. Soldiers deployed in these missions handle sensitive tasks such as protecting civilians, facilitating safe elections, and aiding in the reconstruction of societies ravaged by conflict. Their duty demands negotiation skills, cultural sensitivity, and a steadfast adherence to humanitarian values.
India's standing as a responsible global participant is underscored through these endeavors. Serving under the UN flag allows Indian forces to build international trust and shows the Army's commitment to not just national security, but to global peace and stability.
Sustaining Peace at Home
While many are aware of the Army's external defense roles, its contribution to internal security often goes unnoticed. In regions beset by insurgency or extremism, Army units engage in operations aimed at restoring order and assisting civil governance.
The Rashtriya Rifles, a dedicated counter-insurgency branch of the Army, exemplifies this aspect of duty. Operating within sensitive regions, they engage combatants while fostering goodwill among local citizens. Their presence is critical for stabilizing troubled areas, restoring normalcy for those who live there.
These initiatives involve intricate operations, from gathering intelligence to conducting joint missions with other forces, all while promoting human rights and reducing violence. The success of such endeavors hinges on the Army's ability to seamlessly blend tactical effectiveness with community outreach.
Strengthening Civil-Military Bonds
The collaboration between the Indian Army and civilian institutions is dynamic and evolving. In recent years, the Army has launched initiatives that enhance civil-military relationships and promote skill development among both civilians and soldiers.
Projects such as Exercise Samanvay Shakti, started in 2025, emphasize this integration, incorporating military units, local governments, healthcare sectors, and more to create collaborative strategies for disaster management and community development in states like Assam and Manipur.
Additionally, partnerships with educational institutions, such as collaborations with Delhi Technological University, represent a forward-thinking approach to defense technology research. These initiatives involve workshops and skill enhancement in areas including AI, robotics, and cybersecurity, equipping Army personnel for future challenges and contributing to national technological advancements.
Such endeavors reflect the Army's commitment to national growth, educational initiatives, and innovation.
While the five roles highlighted are important, they form just one facet of a broader spectrum of service.
In times of health crises, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, the Army’s medical units set up field hospitals, oversaw vaccine distribution logistics, and aided overwhelmed civil health systems, demonstrating efficient deployment and disciplined practices.
Animals have traditionally played indispensable roles in military operations. The Remount & Veterinary Corps ensures the well-being of horses, mules, camels, and military working dogs. This commitment will be celebrated in public parades, including the 2026 Republic Day, spotlighting this unique aspect of military life.
Army events aimed at youth and students promote discipline, civic duty, and national pride. Exhibitions such as ‘Know Your Army,’ showcasing indigenous defense technologies and weaponry, educate and inspire public appreciation for the Army’s capabilities.
National Army Day transcends mere celebration; it serves as a reminder that India's defenders shoulder diverse responsibilities—strengthening the nation in all circumstances.
From providing disaster aid and engaging in overseas peacekeeping to developing infrastructure and fostering research collaborations, the Army's influence permeates numerous areas. Their ethos of Protect, Serve, and Inspire resonates within every community they serve.
In acknowledging these lesser-known roles, we enrich our understanding of the Army's extensive contributions and heighten our gratitude for the enduring service of its soldiers who guard not just borders, but humanity itself.
