Sukma Ram Temple Reopens After 21-Years Closure in Chhattisgarh

After being shuttered for 21 years due to Naxalite insurgency, a revered Ram temple in the Bastar region of Chhattisgarh saw its doors reopened on Monday, April 8th. Situated in Kerlapenda village, approximately 90 km away from Sukma district headquarters in Bastar division, the ancient temple witnessed a remarkable resurgence as locals joined hands to cleanse its premises and conduct a puja ceremony dedicated to Lord Rama, Goddess Sita, and Lakshman ji.

In the Naxal-affected Chintalnar region of Sukma, villagers and tribal communities expressed jubilation through dance as the temple, closed for over two decades, embraced worship once again. Collaborating closely with the locals, CRPF jawans from the 74 Corps played a pivotal role in facilitating the temple's revival, marking a poignant moment of unity and cultural reclamation amid challenging circumstances.

Sukma SP Kiran Chavan provided insights into the temple's closure, attributing it to forceful Naxalite intervention back in 2003. He revealed that during the peak of Naxal activity, insurgents had coerced villagers into ceasing temple activities under threat of reprisal. The temple's location, strategically positioned in an area known to be a Naxal stronghold, rendered its closure a significant tactical move for the insurgents, serving as a locus for gatherings and movements.

Though the exact antiquity of the temple remains elusive, local narratives suggest its origins trace back to the 1970s. With a thriving community of 800 residents, plans are underway to organize a 'bhandara' celebration in conjunction with the forthcoming Ram Navami festival, symbolizing a resurgence of faith and tradition within the temple precincts.

Ram Navami, commemorated on the ninth day (Navami) of the Chaitra month in the Hindu lunar calendar, holds profound significance for devotees. This year, Ram Navami is slated to be observed on Wednesday, April 17th, further imbuing the temple's revival with spiritual fervor and anticipation.
