In Bangladesh, political violence is escalating ahead of the upcoming elections. On Monday, a student leader was shot in the head by unidentified assailants in the southern city of Khulna.
The victim has been named as Muhammad Motaleb Sikdar, a prominent member of the National Citizen Party (NCP), who is instrumental in the party's labour wing.
The attack occurred at approximately 11:45 am in the Sonadanga neighborhood of Khulna, where Sikdar was inside his residence when the gunmen struck at close range.
Sikdar sustained a gunshot wound to the left side of his head and was immediately transported to Khulna Medical College Hospital. Following initial treatment, he was later moved to another facility for a CT scan to assess the extent of his injuries. His condition remains serious.
At the time of the shooting, he was preoccupied with organizing a forthcoming labour rally for his party in Khulna, serving as a key coordinator of the NCP’s labour faction.
Local police have confirmed the incident and are currently investigating the motives behind the attack. They are working diligently to apprehend the perpetrators.
This incident occurs during a particularly volatile period for Bangladesh, which has seen significant protests and unrest following the assassination of a radical political figure earlier this month. His murder has triggered widespread turmoil across various cities.
With national elections slated for February 2026, political unrest is palpable. Recent weeks have reported increased violence, attacks, and heightened fears among minority groups.
Analysts caution that such violent incidents reflect a deteriorating security situation. There is growing concern about the potential for further violence as election day approaches.
Authorities have promised to implement measures to uphold law and order, aiming for peaceful elections. Meanwhile, the health status of the injured student leader from Khulna is being closely monitored.
