A shocking incident unfolded on Friday at a tire factory in central Japan, where a 38-year-old man carried out an attack, stabbing eight individuals and injuring seven others by lobbing bleach. The tragedy took place at the Yokohama Rubber Co. facility in Mishima city, part of Shizuoka prefecture, situated west of Tokyo.
Emergency services promptly responded after the assault was reported. Local authorities noted that the suspect wielded a survival knife to stab the eight victims, with five in critical condition who were rushed to nearby hospitals for immediate care. Alongside the stabbings, the assailant also threw bleach at seven other individuals, inflicting chemical injuries that required medical attention.
Police quickly apprehended the suspect at the scene on charges of attempted murder. Eyewitnesses reported that the attacker donned a gas mask, which heightened the alarming nature of the assault. At this moment, officials have yet to reveal any details about the motive or background of the suspect.
This incident has raised significant concerns across the region, as Japan is renowned for its low crime rates and stringent gun control, which make violent crimes uncommon. However, there has been an increasing trend in violent knife attacks in recent years, fueling worries about public and workplace safety.
Authorities are continuing their inquiries to ascertain the underlying reasons for the attack and to avert similar occurrences in the future. No additional information on the suspect’s identity or motives has been disclosed as of now.
Meanwhile, those injured are receiving medical treatment, while the community grapples with the aftermath of this violent episode at the tire factory.
