The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has initiated both criminal and civil lawsuits against Italian-Thai Development (ITD) following a tragic crane collapse at a high-speed rail construction site in Si Khiew, Nakhon Ratchasima. This incident, which occurred on January 14, 2026, involved a crane from the Thai-Chinese high-speed rail project crashing onto a moving train, resulting in several fatalities and numerous injuries.
In immediate response, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport, Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, has mandated the formation of a committee to investigate safety protocols at the construction site and ascertain the accident's cause. The committee is expected to report its findings within 15 days.
Both SRT and ITD will compensate those impacted. Families of deceased individuals will each receive 1.34 million THB, while injured passengers will have all medical expenses covered until they fully recover. Claims for additional losses, including property damage, can also be submitted for consideration.
Acting SRT Governor Anan Phonimdang emphasized that ITD and SRT must rigorously comply with safety regulations for ongoing projects. Contractors are instructed to coordinate with station officials and suspend work when trains are present in construction zones to avert accidents.
SRT has already cleared the affected train carriages from the tracks and plans to begin removing the damaged crane promptly. Repairs to the rail line are anticipated to take about a week. To enhance safety and avoid similar occurrences, SRT intends to install sensors and CCTV monitoring at construction sites.
From a legal standpoint, SRT has filed a criminal case concerning the fatalities and a civil suit for damages incurred from the event, which includes harm to public property and loss of reputation. Further legal actions will be evaluated based on the investigation’s outcome.
This incident has sparked urgent discussions surrounding construction safety protocols, leading to demands for stricter regulations and improved oversight on Thailand's high-speed rail initiatives.
