Sri Lanka is bracing for unsettled weather conditions as the Department of Meteorology has issued a statement warning of several spells of showers and strong winds across multiple provinces and districts. This advisory comes at a time when South Asia continues to witness changing weather patterns, highlighting the urgency of climate resilience and preparedness.
According to the Department, intermittent rainfall is expected in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and North-Western provinces, as well as in the central and southern districts of Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Galle, and Matara. These rains may intensify during the evening and nighttime, posing risks of localized flooding, waterlogging in urban areas, and disruptions to daily life.
The rest of the island is expected to remain largely dry, but officials caution that sudden shifts in weather cannot be ruled out given the region’s vulnerability to climate fluctuations.
In addition to showers, strong winds reaching 40–50 kmph are likely to occur over the western slopes of the Central Hills, and across the Northern, North-Central, North-Western, and Southern provinces, including the Trincomalee district. General wind patterns will blow from the southwest to the west, averaging 30–40 kmph.
Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious of falling tree branches and potential damage to power lines, which could disrupt electricity supply and road safety. Travelers, motorists, and outdoor workers have been advised to plan ahead to avoid exposure to hazardous conditions.
The Department has further warned that the sea areas around the island are expected to become rough at times, with showers likely off the coast from Colombo via Galle to Matara.
Winds may increase to 50–60 kmph in sea areas from Chilaw to Mannar via Puttalam and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota, creating high risks for fishing activities.
Similarly, seas from Chilaw to Matara via Colombo and Galle, and from Mannar to Trincomalee via Kankesanthurai and Mullaitivu may also become rough, with wind speeds reaching up to 50 kmph.
The fishing community has been strongly cautioned against venturing into the ocean under these conditions, as rough seas could endanger lives and livelihoods.
Meteorologists warn that heavy rains may lead to flooding of low-lying areas and road blockages. Urban flooding could disrupt transportation, slow down emergency response, and directly affect residents in vulnerable areas.
Agriculture is also at risk. Paddy cultivation and other crops could be damaged, threatening food supply chains and farmers’ income. Rural communities, heavily dependent on agriculture, may face economic setbacks if the rains persist for several days.
The Department has also expressed concern over health risks following the rains. Increased mosquito breeding due to stagnant water could result in a spike in dengue cases and other vector-borne diseases. Health authorities are urging the public to eliminate breeding grounds by clearing water-logged areas and maintaining proper sanitation.
The public is urged to:
Stay alert to official weather bulletins.
Avoid unnecessary travel in flood-prone areas.
Report fallen trees, power line damages, or other emergencies to relevant authorities.
Refrain from engaging in sea and fishing activities until conditions improve.
This weather warning comes at a time when South Asia has been increasingly vulnerable to climate-driven extreme events, ranging from monsoon disruptions to severe droughts. Such weather patterns serve as a reminder of the global urgency to strengthen disaster preparedness, protect biodiversity, and safeguard communities.
